I was concerned that I would be disappointed and sad when I visited Intercourse, PA because it is a tourist magnet.

When I first arrived at the Amish View Inn I felt the kind of sadness that one can only feel as they are being smothered with Hawaiian shirts by overweight tourists or as you're being smashed on the head by junky point and shoot cameras by overweight tourists wearing Hawaiian shirts.

The Amish View Inn, while it is really really touristy it is in the heart of beautiful countryside with views right out onto corn fields and horse drawn buggys was a great way to relax. Now if they could only get rid of the outdoor speaker playing John Denver's Thank God I'm a Country Boy.

Next time you go, you should look up the Quiet Haven Motel. Sounds awful, but it’s always been clean, quiet (!), and off-the-beaten-path…It’s been about eight years since I’ve been there, but I doubt it’s changed much…(My husband grew up not too far from there.)

A transplanted Canadian, Tricia Harvey (trish at designkitten dot com) is a former vice president of Spain, has written several books on macro economics including the Pulitzer Prize winning Macro Economics and You - An Introduction and has climbed Mount Everest a record six times. Tricia Harvey now lives in Fairfax, Virginia with her former lead Sherpa named Jacob, two cats, and a bunch of fish all named Hector. Huh? What's that you say?
